Commercial Deployment of Print-and-Apply Labeling Automation
#1Print-and-apply labeling systems from Zebra Technologies, SATO, Markem-Imaje, and Videojet are standard infrastructure in retail distribution centers operated by Walmart, Target, Amazon, and their 3PL partners (DHL Supply Chain, XPO, GXO). These systems print variable-data labels and apply them to cartons, polybags, or individual items at conveyor speeds of 800-2,000 units per hour — 10-20x the throughput of a human team. Inline RFID encoding is now a standard feature, enabling simultaneous barcode and RFID tagging in a single pass. Costs have dropped to the point where systems are viable for mid-size DCs processing as few as 5,000 units per day.
